Recovery, repair & inflammation
TB-500
A synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4, studied for wound healing and tissue repair. The full thymosin beta-4 protein has had clinical trials; TB-500 itself has not.
How it works
A synthetic copy of the active part of thymosin β4. It binds actin, helps cells move to an injury and supports new blood vessels.
What it is used for
Muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. Widely used in horse racing.
What the evidence says
Animal studies only. The full thymosin β4 protein had human trials for eye and skin wounds, with modest results.
Side effects and cautions
Tiredness and headache. Theoretical tumor concern. Banned in sport.
Half-life
Not established in people
Makes sense for
- Adults recovering from muscle, tendon or ligament injuries
Does not make sense for
- Active cancer or a history of cancer
- Competitive athletes (banned in sport)
Boost the effect
- Collagen or gelatin (10–15 g) with 50 mg of vitamin C, 30–60 minutes before rehab exercise: supports collagen in tendons and ligaments
- Enough protein: tissue repair needs amino acids
- Gentle, progressive loading of the injured area: guides how the new tissue forms
