Cerebrolysin
A mixture of peptides from pig brain, approved in several European and Asian countries for stroke and dementia. Not approved in the US.
The approved medicine is a 215 mg/ml solution given in hospital, 10–50 ml a day. The protocol shown is the community reference for research powder vials: 60 mg under the skin twice a week. No trial has used injection under the skin, and the cycle length is not established; uPrime counts 4 weeks.
How it works
A mix of small peptides and amino acids from pig brain that acts like the body’s nerve growth factors: it protects neurons and helps the brain adapt.
What it is used for
Stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury and dementia, in the countries where it is approved. Usually given in courses of several weeks.
What the evidence says
Many trials with mixed results: a Cochrane review found no clear benefit on death or dependency after stroke, while some dementia trials showed small gains in thinking.
Side effects and cautions
Dizziness, headache and agitation. Rare seizures and allergic reactions. Not for people with epilepsy or severe kidney failure.
Half-life
Not established in people
Makes sense for
- Recovery after stroke or brain injury, with a doctor
Does not make sense for
- Epilepsy
- Severe kidney failure
- Allergy to pork proteins
Boost the effect
- Aerobic exercise: raises BDNF and supports brain plasticity
- Omega-3 (DHA) from fish: a building block of brain cell membranes
- Regular, sufficient sleep: when the brain consolidates memory
