Weight loss & metabolic health
CBL-514
An injectable small molecule developed to reduce fat in the area where it is injected. In clinical trials; not approved.
How it works
Injected directly into a fat area, it makes the fat cells there self-destruct (apoptosis), so the fat layer gets thinner in that spot only.
What it is used for
Non-surgical reduction of localized fat, such as the belly. Also studied for cellulite.
What the evidence says
Phase 2 trials reported a reduction in abdominal fat thickness. It is not approved anywhere yet.
Side effects and cautions
Pain, swelling and bruising where it is injected. In trials it is given by clinicians as many small injections across the treated area.
Half-life
Not established in people
Makes sense for
- Adults close to their target weight with a localized area of belly fat
Does not make sense for
- General weight loss or obesity
- Self-injection: it is applied by a clinician
